Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

The concept of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) forms the bedrock of a child’s learning journey. FLN emphasizes the importance of making sure that children develop fundamental literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (mathematics) skills in the early years of their education.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 came into effect on 29th July, 2020 with the principles to develop good human beings capable of rational thought and action, possessing compassion and empathy, courage and resilience, scientific temper and creative imagination with sound ethical moorings and values.

The fundamental principles that will guide both the education system at large, as well as the individual institutions mainly include, recognizing, identifying, and fostering the unique capabilities of each student, according the highest priority to achieving Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) by all students by Grade-3, flexibility, creativity and critical thinking etc.

Further the Ministry of Education has launched the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy i.e. NIPUN Bharat Mission. This mission seeks to adopt a multi-pronged strategy which includes a clear goal setting, focused pedagogical approach and curriculum, continuous capacity building of teachers, preparation of quality teaching-learning materials to support the desired classroom practices, making the assessments to support and ensure learning, entailing stakeholders’ engagement and a robust IT system to analyses and report the progress. To put all of these collectively in a system requires new and reformed pedagogical approach for class room engagement.

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, a national level pace setting educational institution in the field of school education has taken up various initiatives to realize the aims and objectives enshrined in National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As envisioned in NEP 2020, KVS pledges to ensuring inclusive, equitable and qualitative education to its students irrespective of their social or economic backgrounds by providing them lifelong learning opportunities. Towards the empowerment of teachers by way of providing them adequate training and support materials in order to achieve Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in a time bound manner, a number of programmes have been undertaken.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy: An urgent and necessary prerequisite to learning outlines the goals as; the ability to read and write, and perform basic operations with numbers for all future schooling and lifelong learning. Attaining Foundational Literacy and Numeracy for all children will thus become an urgent national mission. KVS, upto a great extent had adopted child centred, pedagogical practices such as activity based, play way, joyful learning, role play etc. which suited to the achievement of learning outcomes. Various programmes like Common Minimum Programme (CMP), Strengthening of Primary Education, Back to Basics etc. were introduced in all Kendriya Vidyalayas from time to time to ensure qualitative growth in the curricular transactions.

But still it was felt that our students also needed another boost to improve upon their foundational literacy and numeracy in the light of NEP 2020. To realize this goal, the experienced HMs/PRTs of KVs across the country have put their experiences and ideas together and have come out with Concept Wise Modules (CWM) to help the Primary Teachers of Kendriya Vidyalayas to bring about pedagogical changes in their classroom transactions mainly using toys, puppets, storytelling, art, music, indigenous games, experiential learning and other activities.
