Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

The concept of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) forms the bedrock of a child’s learning journey. FLN emphasizes the importance of making sure that children develop fundamental literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (mathematics) skills in the early years of their education.

As a part of implementation of recommendations of NEP-2020 pertaining to Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, KVS has undertaken an exercise (apart from many initiatives) to prepare Concept Wise Modules for teachers teaching Classes I –V to bring about pedagogical changes in the classroom transactions. To begin with, Concept Wise Modules of Class-I on Literacy and Numeracy have been prepared by experienced HMs/PRTs of KVs across the country with Smt. PS Nagalakshmi, HM, KV Picket, Hyderabad as Coordinator Foundational Literacy(English), Smt. Seema Chaudhary, HM, KV Zirakpur, Chandigarh as Coordinator Foundational Numeracy and Shri Anand Singh, HM, KV Keshavpuram, Delhi as Coordinator Foundational Literacy (Hindi).

The salient features of these Concept Wise Modules are:

Part-I
  • Introduction of the concept.
  • The competencies/learning objectives associated with it are defined.
  • The Learning Outcomes are clearly spelt out.
Part-II
  • Pedagogical interventions to bring about desired changes in the classroom teaching.
  • To make the learning a joyful experience-storytelling, role play, toy, puppet, art, music integrated activities are included (Videos/PPTs).

Part-III
  • Testing of  the achievement of Learning Outcomes.
  • Structured assessment work sheets  included.
